Types of Events

The Honda car club gives members the opportunity to participate in a range of local motorsport activities. The descriptions below cover some of the more common events, however being part of  the Marque Sports Car Association, a CAMS affiliated association, also allows members to participate in almost any motorsport activity providing other conditions (such as competition licenses) are met.

Motorkhanas

A motorkhana tests the drivers ability to control a vehicle through a tight course, usually laid out by witches hats on a sealed surface or sometimes an unsealed surface. As it is not considered a speed event, vehicle speeds do not exceed 80km/h.

Motorkhanas are a great way learn, experience and compete while handling a vehicle within a safe environment.

Like Khanacross, competitors start and end within a marked area, and do a series of different courses throughout the day. Times are totaled up, plus any penalties, to calculate placings.

License Requirement

A Level 2 Non-Speed (L2NS) CAMS license is required, which competitive Honda car club members are eligible for.

Khanacross

First Gen Civic in KhanacrossThink of Khanacross as a mini rally. It is held within a comparatively small area (a small paddock is typical), and the track fairly short, loose in nature (dirt/gravel etc) and restricted in speed through it’s size and layout.

A series of timed runs are made by each competitor, starting and ending within an area marked out by cones (called a garage). For each run the course may be laid out differently.

At the end of the day the times are totalled up, plus any time penalties (for hitting cones or going the wrong way for example), and a finishing order calculated, to work out placings.

Cars are entered into particular classes, as determined by capacity and/or driven wheels, so you are competing against similar vehicles.

Super Sprints

supersprint_mallala_eg_civicA real race track, your car, and no speed limit.

A super sprint is timed laps around a sealed race track, such as Mallala Motorsport Park. It is a speed event, where the basic aim is to complete laps as quickly as possible.

The event generally consists of a practice session and 3 or 4 competitive runs. Each run consists of a standing start and about 3 flying laps. You are paired up with another competitor of similar speed off the start line, and each pair of cars start about 5 seconds apart.

Cars are put into different classes based on engine capacity and modifications, however who you get to drag race off the start line is purely dependent on your lap times.

Overtaking is allowed on straights during acceleration only – no one wants to bingle their pride and joy, or hold up other compititors. Remember – the only competitor you must beat is your own lap time.

Super sprints are a great way to get to know your cars potential, and improve your driving skills.

A Level 2 Speed (L2S) CAMS license is required, which Honda car club members are eligible for.

Car Preparation

Road registered vehicles can enter, but will generally require the following additions:

  1. Blue triangle indicating battery location
  2. Mounted fire extinguisher, within reach of the driver in belted position
  3. Clear contact over forward facing glass
  4. Competition number clearly displayed
  5. Timing system transponder – Dorian. Available for purchase or hire from Marque Sports Car Association

* Malalla race track is particularly hard on brakes – most vehicles require racing specification pads and fluid to be driven to their full potential in safety.

Rally Sprint

ED Civic at a Rally SprintThe most adrenaline pumping fun you can have with your clothes on!

8 klm stages traversed once at a controlled speed to compile pace notes then travelled at competitive speeds three times in one direction then three times in the reverse direction, and what have you got? A Rallysprint.

Any of you who have played Colin McRae on the PlayStation and managed to work up an adrenaline sweat imagine what it is like to do the same but for real. Beside you a co-driver (without accent) leading you in advance into each twist, turn, jump or caution, ahead of you 8 klm of the best quality forestry roads on offer and an open invitation to go as fast as you like or as fast as you and your co-driver dare.
